Invitation to participate

PHOTON Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Project
New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE)
Professional Development Project for Secondary and Post-secondary Faculty

You are invited to apply to participate in PHOTON Problem-Based Learning (PBL), a national optics/photonics professional development project for science and technology high school teachers and community college faculty. PHOTON PBL is funded in part by the Advanced Technological Education program of the National Science Foundation.

In collaboration with industry and research institutions, PHOTON PBL will develop eight problem-based “challenges” that will be field-tested in 16 schools. These challenges will give students the opportunity to practice real world problem solving, a critical skill in today’s workplace.

Preliminary work began on the project in August 2006 and in January 2007 PHOTON PBL held a Challenge Partner workshop with the six companies and two universities that will be formulating the challenges.

We invite you and your organization to apply to be one of the 16 education partners. Responsibilities of the education partners are to:

* Apply in collaboration with a partner education institution. High School applicants should find a community college with whom to partner and community college applicants should seek out a high school partner.

* Participate in a professional development workshop at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island from July 22 – July 27, 2007. Your room and board will be provided and travel expenses reimbursed.

* Field test two or more of the PBL challenges between fall 2007 and spring 2009.

* Assist in the development of teaching guides to support the challenges.

Education Partners will receive a stipend during academic year 2007-2008 and again during 2008-2009 after field-testing two or more challenges and completion of the teaching guides.

For more information contact Senior Director of Professional and Resource Development Fenna Hanes by phone at 617-357-9620 x129 or email at fhanes@nebhe.org. The application deadline is March 30, 2007. Please visit the PHOTON PBL web site  at www.nebhe.org/photonpbl where you can download an application.
